The Holiday Race

Though I talk about how I am a planner, I do have some areas where I tend to procrastinate as well.  I must admit, Christmas tends to be one of those areas.  However, this is our first Christmas with Shelby and I think she might have cured me of this particular procrastination practice.

I was moseying along with our usual routine of getting out all of the decorations, starting to make my Christmas list and deciding who would be where for what Christmas meal and celebration.  Kudos to my hubby because he got his part of Christmas done quickly.  All in one weekend, he put lights on the house, the trees, the bushes and even went out and got us a real Christmas tree.  What did I have done?  Not. A. Thing.

I did manage to get ornaments on our real tree in between Shelby napping one weekend.  A couple of days later I managed to get the Angel on top of the tree.  Two weeks out, Brett and I got serious about the Christmas shopping and went out and tackled what we had left on our list with our 10 month old along for the ride.  Thank goodness she likes to “go” and doesn’t put up a big fuss.  We also grabbed the stockings and hung them by the fireplace that weekend.

One week out from Christmas I managed to remember to buy stamps and get my Christmas cards in the mail.  That took me a good week to randomly complete.  Less than a week before Christmas and no Santa photo, but thankfully Shelby’s daycare had Santa come to her school for breakfast and photos.  Phew.

So here we are: Christmas Day, 2012.  And you know what, none of those things I just mentioned matter.  I am so grateful to have our children and loved ones as I know there are those out there who do not.  I am cherishing every single moment because I know each day is a gift.  I wish you peace and blessings this Christmas and hope you too have learned to slow down and focus on what is truly important.  I certainly have.
